Read Write Inc


Our school has been appointed as a Read Write Inc. Model School for the academic year 2016/17 as a result of our excellent practice of Read Write Inc. Phonics.

Read Write Inc., developed by Ruth Miskin, provides a whole-school approach to teaching literacy for 4-11 years olds that create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.

Read Write Inc is a method of learning centred around phonics, blending them together to read and write words and using these learnt sounds in their reading and writing.

It is delivered in a systematic programme. All staff (teachers and teaching assistants) have been trained to deliver this programme.

The children read and write each day, grouped according to their reading level, rather than their year group. This means that children do not struggle because the work is too difficult or get bored because the work is too easy.

 

How and what do children learn?

            READING

            The children:

v  learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letters/letter groups using simple picture prompts

v  learn to read words using sound blending

v  read nonsense words to ensure that they are using and applying the 44 sounds they have learnt

v  read lively stories featuring words they have learned to sound out

v  answer questions to show that they understand what they are reading

        

            WRITING

            The children:

v  learn to write the letters/letter groups which represent the 44 sounds

v  learn to write words by saying the sounds and graphemes  (a letter or group of letters representing a sound)

v   learn to build sentences orally

v  start with simple sentences and develop towards more complex ones by the end of the programme

v  compose a range of texts using discussion prompts


TALKING

             They work in pairs so that they can take full part in the lesson. They learn to:

                 v  answer every question

                v  practise every activity with their partner

                v  take turns in talking to each other


During Read Write Inc (and other) lessons we all use the same management signals. These silent signals are demonstrated by the adult.

They are used to ensure effective behaviour management.
