Learning at home

Home work activities will be set on Friday afternoons. The children will complete a range of activities online or in homework books relating to current classroom topics.

We use lots of online platforms to help with our learning in Year 4.

BBC Supermovers and Math Shed help us to learn out times tables ready for the Y4 Multiplication Table Check (MTC).

Discovery Education has lots of information related to our topics.

Get Epic is great for online reading.

Reading at home

To support the learning that your child enjoys in school, it is necessary to read with your child. Once they have read, you can ask them a few questions about what they have read to check their understanding and make a comment in their Reading Record book.

By Year 4 children are expected to fill in their reading records themselves at least three times a week. Please encourage your child to do this using the sentence openers and VIPERS skills at the front of the reading record to help them.

This half term we will be exploring states of matter and learning about the huge impact rivers have on the land and communities they flow through.

As geographers, the children will be using maps including online mapping tools, books and images of key rivers to learn all about the different parts of a river. During this unit children will explore the science of the water-cycle and design experiments to fully understand the processes involved.

In this awesome topic we will study the civilisation that survived for over 3000 years:

Ancient Egypt

We will study their daily life, using real images and artefacts. We will learn why Egypt is called the Gift of the Nile; what their Mummification ritual involved and why they embalmed their dead. We will also study the most famous Pharaoh Tutankhamen and learn why we weren't ever meant to find out about him.

This term the topic is 'Why are Rainforests so special?' This engaging topic will unravel the mysteries of these unique ecosystems, as children delve into the diverse flora and fauna that call rainforests home. Through a blend of science, geography, and hands-on activities, children will uncover the significance of rainforests in maintaining global biodiversity. They will learn about the delicate balance of these ecosystems and the impact of human activities like deforestation.

This term we are investigating the difficulties of invading and settling in Britain. We will be examining various historical factors such as geography, resistance from indigenous populations, and military tactics employed by both invaders and defenders. This inquiry will provided us with insights into the challenges faced by historical invaders and settlers in establishing control over Britain.
